Brightline and the Expansion to Tampa: What We Know So Far

Brightline, the high-speed train that currently connects Miami with Orlando, plans to extend its service to Tampa. The initial goal is to link the two cities through the I-4 corridor, strengthening mobility in Central Florida while boosting tourism and the local economy.

To move forward, the company has requested up to $400 million in tax-exempt bonds from the Florida Development Finance Corporation. A survey by the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization, with more than 12,000 participants, showed strong support for a station in areas such as Downtown Tampa, Ybor City, or Channelside. Respondents highlighted their interest in using the train for events and trips to Orlando’s theme parks.

The plan also connects with the Sunshine Corridor project in Orlando, which envisions a shared line with SunRail and stops near attractions like the upcoming Epic Universe park. This integration would reinforce Brightline’s role as a key player in Florida’s intercity mobility.

Although the company still faces financial challenges and has not yet reached profitability, local authorities and investors view the expansion as a transformative opportunity. Service between Orlando and Tampa is expected to become a reality within the next five to ten years.
